Rugs can completely transform your room, so choosing the right one can be a headache. Size and color are key issues, but there are also choices of materials to be made - such as natural or synthetic - and the care that comes with them. If you're not sure where to start, our rug buying guide will help you find your footprints.

The tufted carpets are formed by tufts of yarn that protrude through a fabric base. They are then fixed with latex to give the carpet what we call a pile. Wool is most used in this type of rug and the final product can be either soft and velvety (if the pile is cut) or durable or for heavy use - ideal for high traffic areas - if left as a free worm. Due to the way they are made, tufted carpets can have intricate designs.

2. Rugs with low pile

Carpets with a flatter weave come are often still woven according to traditional methods, using a loom and a mixture of cotton or wool. This technique means that they are durable and, as they are usually small, they are perfect for hallways or kitchens or bed sides.

3. Knotted Rugs, Kilims

Knotted rugs are created by twisting individual threads around the warp - by hand - and tying them tightly to secure them in place. Although simple to make, the fact that they are handmade makes them unique and often costly. Dense and durable, these rugs are suitable for a warm space or bedroom.
